The Chain gate wells: Wells takes its name from the natural springs which feed the lake in the garden of the Bishop’s Palace and the moat surrounding it. The city is dominated by the great Cathedral which is renowned for its wonderful collection of carved figures (some of them lager than life-size), which adorn the west front. While at Wells do not miss the Chain Gate and Vicar’s Close, one of the oldest mediaeval streets in Europe.
TowerBridge, opened in 1894, cost over a million pounds to build. The twin bascules, each of which weighs more than a thousand tons, are raised to allow the passage of large vessels moving up or down the river Thames.
